Since it has been a couple weeks since my initial “Hydra” experiment using the remaining end of a bunch of celery, I thought it was a good time to do an update.
After my initial shock wore off from Week 1 (that something actually was growing, I introduced diluted Mittleider Weekly feed into the cup. For those of you who have not heard of this method of gardening before, the Mittleider Method combines raised garden beds with hydroponic gardening, but without hydroponic expense. Crops are nourished by supplemental feedings of natural mineral nutrients (as in hydroponics), but with no special equipment. For more information on the Mittleider Method, please see the following website: http://growfood.com
As you can see in the figure below, the celery started to take off with the weekly feed. By Week 3, the celery was really starting to develop height and leaves. By Week 4 (this week), the celery was 1.5″ high and sprouting a ton of leaves. I am continuing to feed the celery with the Mittleider Weekly Feed, and I will continue to provide updates even when I plant this into a planter in the near future.
